Software IP audit: ownership and evidence readiness

A readiness review starts with the records a company can produce today. It can identify missing ownership documentation, unclear component provenance, and gaps in evidence handling without assuming that a dispute or infringement exists.

Organize the review inputs

  • Create an inventory of products, versions, repositories, and distribution models.
  • Locate contributor agreements, assignment records, licenses, and dependency inventories.
  • Record responsible owners and the review status of each gap.

Make the output actionable

Separate facts confirmed by records from questions requiring legal interpretation. Assign an owner, next step, and dependency to each issue. Define what the review excludes, such as a statutory audit, exhaustive infringement search, or legal opinion.

The legal context

Different protections have different requirements. A review of copyright ownership is not the same as evaluating trade-secret safeguards. The scope should identify when qualified counsel is needed rather than treating a documentation checklist as clearance.
